Just for Kids
Your public library is the place to be if you’re a young person in town. We have lots of fun stuff to do and can even get you help with your homework.
Here are some of the great programs we have to offer:
Preschool Program
Every Friday morning staff share their love of books and reinforce early literacy skills through stories, songs, and fingerplays in a small group setting. Our Preschool Program provides wonderful opportunities for children to learn to enjoy books and group activities.
- All storytimes are free, open to the public, and no registration is required
- Storytimes start promptly on schedule. Allow extra time for parking and getting nametags.
- Please refrain from bringing food and beverage into storytime.
- If children in your care become disruptive, please remove them until they are comfortable and ready to listen.
- For information on how home daycare groups may attend storytimes, please call 639-2228.
Westwood Kids
We are proud to offer a variety of activities for kids at our Westwood Branch. Special craft days, Youth nights, and story times happen each month. Please drop by to pick up a Book Mark of Events or download a Calendar from our front page to find out what’s happening at the library!
Class Visits
Why not bring your class to visit their local library?
A visit could contain some of the following;
- Introduce the children to the library service, explain how to use it, show the range of material available and read a selection of stories, poems and rhymes.
- Arrange a practical session on finding information, using a wide range of books, databases and online resources.
- Demonstrate the use of computers in the community, by finding out how the library computer works from issuing books to providing information.
- Promote a range of fiction stories on a theme of your choice, for your particular age group e.g. Fantasy, Historical etc.
Class visits may be booked Wednesdays at 9:30am or 11am and Fridays at 11am. For more information and to arrange a visit please contact the Norwood Library at 639-1800.
We look forward to seeing you and your class!
Afterschool Homework Help
We are very excited to be partnering with the Learning Disabilities Association of Peterborough in offering afterschool tutoring support to students. Find out more today!
With the heightened awareness shown by parents and educators to the very special needs of children and youth who are learning disabled, live with ADHD and/or suffer the many associated disorders, the demand for service is quickly growing. The Computers for Literacy Development Program [CFLD] is committed in providing direct tutoring programs within the Asphodel-Norwood area so our youth may experience the redeeming joy of achievement and learning.
CFLD is a one-to-one tutoring program utilizing Assistive Technology for students from grades 1 to 10. CFLD uses a ‘writing and reading’ approach that includes the teaching and training of students with a focus on literacy, Assistive Technology training, building study skills and reinforcing learning strategies. The program will help increase success and independence through effective decision-making, problem solving and self-advocacy skill building, opening doors to previously inaccessible learning opportunities for many children with special needs.
Parents of enrolled students will meet with the Program Coordinator to discuss their child’s specific needs, strengths and learning styles to develop an Individual Program Plan supporting the development of reading and writing strategies and computer skills training. Parents will also receive a Final Report describing their child’s participation within the CFLD Program and outlining the assistive programs utilized.
Tutors arrive at the Asphodel-Norwood Public Library well prepared with a laptop computer equipped with educational and assistive software as well as non-computer based activities specific to each individual child’s learning needs. In using computers to teach children with learning difficulties we are providing them with an additional learning tool. The portability of the laptop computers allows tutors to bring the technology directly to the students. Children are able to take the skills and strategies learned in the CFLD Program and directly apply it within their own classrooms, accessing available assistive programs, using them independently and successfully.
