Graphic Novels
What exactly is a Graphic Novel? And what the heck is Manga? Even if you think you’re not familiar with it, you probably have seen some examples already. Hopefully this intro will help you avoid getting ink on your face
With the heightened awareness shown by parents and educators to the very special needs of children and youth who are learning disabled, live with ADHD and/or suffer the many associated disorders, the demand for service is quickly growing. The Computers for Literacy Development Program [CFLD] is committed in providing direct tutoring programs within the Asphodel-Norwood area so our youth may experience the redeeming joy of achievement and learning.
CFLD is a one-to-one tutoring program utilizing Assistive Technology for students from grades 1 to 10. CFLD uses a ‘writing and reading’ approach that includes the teaching and training of students with a focus on literacy, Assistive Technology training, building study skills and reinforcing learning strategies. The program will help increase success and independence through effective decision-making, problem solving and self-advocacy skill building, opening doors to previously inaccessible learning opportunities for many children with special needs.
Parents of enrolled students will meet with the Program Coordinator to discuss their child’s specific needs, strengths and learning styles to develop an Individual Program Plan supporting the development of reading and writing strategies and computer skills training. Parents will also receive a Final Report describing their child’s participation within the CFLD Program and outlining the assistive programs utilized.
Tutors arrive at the Asphodel-Norwood Public Library well prepared with a laptop computer equipped with educational and assistive software as well as non-computer based activities specific to each individual child’s learning needs. In using computers to teach children with learning difficulties we are providing them with an additional learning tool. The portability of the laptop computers allows tutors to bring the technology directly to the students. Children are able to take the skills and strategies learned in the CFLD Program and directly apply it within their own classrooms, accessing available assistive programs, using them independently and successfully.
